I recently went on a music binge, buying Allman Bros at SUNY and A&R Studios, Beck & Hammer, Beck Bogert & Appice, Stevie Ray Fire Meets the Fury, Gary Moore's Blues for Jimi, and this. I'm a huge fan of the Brothers and SRV, and a big fan of Jeff and Gary, but this is the disc that blew me away. I'll give 5 stars to both the Allman discs, but only because of the music (not the audio quality). Those discs are presenting music that is familiar to any ABB fan, but just different enough to make it interesting. This is mostly new and completely exciting. This is not one of those discs that grows on you the more you listen, it's one of those "Oh my God, how did I miss this?" kind of discs. At times Derek seems to be channeling Duane Allman, which I suppose is not surprising given the familial connection, but it sent shivers up my spine. Some unbelievable slide work, a touch of Zydeco, and some spleen-tingling blues. This is the music I expected from the "new" Allman Brothers Band, but they didn't quite deliver. It's unfortunate Amazon doesn't post audio samples. Very highly recommended. This is an undiscovered masterpiece.
