Nightout by Ellen Foley. Probably deserving of the title "The best album that most people have never heard". Ellen's voice - the same voice that famously told Meatloaf to "Stop right there! I wanna know right now ..." - was in career best form. The songs, some composed by herself and her writing partner, Fred G, the rest chosen by herself and her producers, were all jems. And those producers, Ian Hunter (Mott the hoople)and Mick Ronson (David Bowie band), were of course excellent musicians in their own right.Allowing the songs and Ellen's vocal performance to speak for themselves, Ian and Mick simply formed a band (Tom Mandel, Hilly Michaels, Martin Briley, Kerryn Tolhurst and Rory Dodd) and rocked along. Mostly providing a musically enticing wall of sound from the rear, and occasionally, and just briefly, dancing to the front while Ellen drew breath, they were the generators that allowed Ellen's vocals to power along. There are a few lucky music fans who have this CD in their collection. And there are those, who if they stumble onto this review, might be smart enough tocorrect their mistake. Better late than never!Martin James
